Cortes Literacy, with the support of Cortes Island School, exists to cultivate curiosity, compassionate discourse, and learning for the whole community. Cortes Literacy was founded through the support from Decoda LIteracy Solutions.
In 2000 Decoda Literacy Solutions formed to ensure that the legacy from the Olympics was leaving behind more than stadiums and athletes, but to build a BC where everyone has the literacy skills they need. They recognize that communities are made of individuals and that literacy are all those skills needed to help citizens reach their full potential. Decoda has helped spread literacy through rural and isolated communities as well through their network of Literacy Outreach Coordinators.
“Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts.Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society(UNESCO, 2004; 2017”
Folk University is an experiment in using our ideas, interests, and skills to bring us closer together. It’s slow learning. It’s literacy at its most fundamental. Folk University was created by Cortes Literacy with the support of neighbours like you. Folk University is a home for all neighbours and community groups interested in sharing their interests, skills, and knowledge. Folk University is not incorporated. It belongs to no one organization. It has no single campus. It exists when and how it needs to. What do you know? Share it!
